This was a fantastic conversation and very much mirrors my own journey.

What you said near the end about hearing the same old "why I hated this part/ version of 'Star Wars' " is another reason to come here to Geeky Stoics - sane, interesting, well-presented thoughts about fandom. Even if I'm not a prequels fan precisely because I felt the morality was slippery and vague, I'm sure I remain welcome here. :D

"Are you trying to set fire to the philosophical underpinnings of this thing that I love?" - YES. That's where genuine discussion can be had about an adaptation's success with the diehard fans of the source material. And especially when, as with current Disney adaptations, they are woke for the sake of box-ticking and lefty point-scoring, rather than using fantasy to present situations, or make use of the fact that it's fantasy and they have more freedom in their casting.

There’s a section of fandom that squeals and tweets (X’s?) and makes a big fuss when it’s not needed; and the infamous section that lose their damn minds just because a character is female or gay. And so often, neither reaction is justified. It’s what’s become infuriating about Star Wars fandom in particular recently, but I could rant on this for some time and shan’t! Geeky Stoics lads can probably say it better.

An interesting conversation and you can see how much you both enjoyed it.
