Good morning, friends! It's time to talk about Luke Skywalker and begin thinking about New Year's resolutions. I know, it’s not even December but hear me out!
Honestly, my favorite time of the year isn't Thanksgiving or even Christmas - it’s New Year's Eve. I love the start of a new year. I love the feeling of newness, the reset, and the promise of a clean slate.
Another reason I love New Year's Eve is that I’ve infused Star Wars into the festivities. My favorite holiday tradition is watching Episode IV: A New Hope and timing it so the Death Star blows up at midnight. In many ways, the greatest deed that Luke Skywalker ever accomplished was tanking the Death Star. It's his defining moment when he turns from a farm boy into a hero of the Rebellion.
This brings me to one of my favorite lines from the 2009 comedy Fanboys. One of the main characters, Hutch, is talking to his friend Eric about life and why they're attempting this hair-brained idea of breaking into Skywalker Ranch. (It’s the quintessential whacky 2000s comedy but perfectly encapsulates Star Wars fandom in anticipation of the prequels)
Hutch: You gotta find your Death Star.
Eric: Okay, I'll bite.
Hutch: Greatest deed Luke Skywalker ever did was take down the Death Star, right? As far as I'm concerned, that's what everybody needs. You need that one bad-ass thing that lets you live on forever, you know.
It's a highly ridiculous movie, but it has a lot of heart.
So here's my question for you, what's your Death Star?
It's something I think a lot about. And it’s something that I've been working on over the last month with all of you Geeky Stoics in mind…
I think your Death Star is that one bold, audacious goal you’d take on if you weren't too burned out, too distracted, or too stuck chasing someone else's version of success.
I know because I've been there.
That's the whole premise behind the mini-workshop I just finished called:
