As much as I (clearly!) respect his storytelling, it's hard to discuss Lucas's original intention because there's been so much said over the years by both he and others, and he's said differing things. That’s of course normal given changing times and passing years.
I’m not knowledgeable on the Grey Jedi since I’m much more of a post-ROTJ EU kind of gal. There’s constant discussion, debate, and agonising amongst Luke, the other Masters, and a faction of the younger Jedi on the use and definition of ‘light’ and ‘dark’ that’s genuinely intriguing, in the ‘New Jedi Order’ series.
